lingWAVES Motor Speech Disorder Assessment (MSDA)

karo lingWAVES module overview

Dysarthria and Apraxia

lingWAVES Motor Speech Disorder Assessment
Recorded and analyzed word sequence. The calculation takes about 6 seconds on a recent Windows XP or Vista PC. All results are clearly arranged and visible at a glance.

lingWAVES Motor Speech Disorder Assessment
MSDA result tracking for 9 records. The trend view shows important motor speech data over time.

Motor Speech Disorders are known as dysarthria or apraxia. Muscles of the mouth may become weak resulting in a slow articulation movement after a stroke or other brain injury or a brain damage results in having trouble sequencing sounds in syllables and words. Beside of other symptoms a person may experience a slow rate of speech or changes in voice quality like hoarseness and breathiness.

Changes in voice quality can be reliable measured with the lingWAVES Vospector (irregularity - hoarseness, noise - breathiness, hoarseness - overall severity). The (maximum) rate of speech can be determined with the Diadochokinetic Rate (DDK). In the past DDK assessment was a time consuming work counting the number of syllables spoken in a given time period.

lingWAVES DDK assessment

A quick DDK assessment within seconds is now available with the lingWAVES Motor Speech Disorder Assessment (MSDA) using new speech technology.

MSDA records a sequence of the word “buttercup” with front, middle and back articulation during one air stream / expiration. After selecting and starting the automatic calculation the DDK rate and other useful measurement values (F0, DDK jitter and SD, SNR, energy slope) are available within 2-5 seconds and are shown in an easy to interpret “green-to-red” result window on the left. The colors of the measurement values show a gradual normal-abnormal indication.

Because of the used new speech technology alignment process of lingWAVES MSDA, the program is also able to extract information about each syllable occurring in the word sequence. Therefore MSDA can measure and display (on the right) pronunciation time for front, middle and back articulation. With this help MSDA gives a great assistance to determine and document special articulation problems. Using the client manager all data and changes of the patient’s speech can be tracked over time.

You can print out a report form for recent and over time assessment. Additionally you can do further acoustic analysis with MSDA recordings, e.g. spectrography of speech.
