78th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
ENT clinic Würzburg, Germany, Department of Oncology, University of Würzburg, Würzburg, Germany, Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology, Oldenburg, Germany, Clinic of Otorhino-laryngology, Hietzing, Austria

Since 1996 patients with advanced laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer eligible for total laryngectomie have been treated with organ preservation with paclitaxel/cisplatin induction chemotherapy and CT-based 3D radiotherapy. The aim of this study was to further analyse the functional outcome concerning the swallowing and the voice function of these patients.

Vocal fold augmentation with Bioplastique material by indirect phonosurgical treatment under topical anesthesia
  Josef Schlömicher-Thier, Matthias Weikert

ENT Office and Austrian Voice Institute, Salzburg, Austria

Vocal cord paralysis is a complex and multifactorial condition. In this study we present 23 patient with vagus nerve lesions that affect only the recurrent laryngeal nerve and two patient with a vagus nerve lesions above the level of the pharyngeal nerve branch. The unilateral abductor paralysis of these patients occurs as a result of lesions caused by following reasons.

Voice Quality After Supracricoid Laryngectomy and Total Laryngectomy With Insertion of Voice Prosthesis
  Gabriela Torrejano, Isabel Guimarães

Journal of Voice, DOI: 10.1016/j.jvoice.2007.08.005
Otorhinolaryngology Department-Voice and Communication Disorders, Hospital Santa Maria, Epe, Lisbon, Portugal

Vocal quality was analyzed in 20 subjects who underwent total laryngectomy with insertion of voice prosthesis (TL with VP) and in 10 subjects who underwent supracricoid laryngectomy (SCL). Acoustic analysis was carried out using Lingwaves and Praat, for sustained vowels and conversation to obtain the fundamental frequency (F0) and jitter parameters. Perceptual evaluations and self-assessment of voice impact on the quality of life were also performed. Results showed statistically significant differences between TL + VP and SCL individuals for the mean F0 during conversation, for Roughness, Grade of voice quality, and self-assessment of speech, with worst results in the SCL group.

Acoustic changes in voice after surgery for snoring: preliminary results

  G. BERTINO, E. MATTI, S. MIGLIAZZI, F. PAGELLA, C. TINELLI1, M. BENAZZO

ACTA OTORHINOLARYNGOL ITAL 26, 110-114, 2006
Department of Otolaryngology Head Neck Surgery, University of Pavia; 1 Biometrics Unit, I.R.C.C.S., Policlinico “S. Matteo”, Pavia, Italy

All surgical procedures for treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea modify the anatomical structure of the upper airways and the resonance characteristics of the vocal tract; this can lead to a modification in voice quality. Purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible modifications of the fundamental frequency (F0) and of the frequency and amplitude of the first (F1) and second (F2) formants of the 5 Italian vowels after different surgical procedures for snoring, to verify if and how these operations can influence voice quality.

The Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) - Basics and Clinical Interpretation
Marc S. De Bodt, Floris L. Wuyts

Paper, WEVOS Forchheim, Germany, 2004
    University of Antwerp, The Netherlands

The Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) is designed as an objective and quantitative correlate of voice quality. It is based on a multivariate analysis of an extended database of more than 1000 normal and pathologic voices for the multi-center study trial initiated by the Belgian Study Group on Voice Disorders (Van de Heyning, et al., 1996). Per patient, more than 45 voice characteristics and measurements were collected. Additionally, the voice quality as perceived by the clinician and expressed by means of the grade of hoarseness was obtained for all subjects (G from the GRBAS scale: normal, light, moderate or severe: Hirano, 1981). The Dysphonia Severity Index was then constructed by a multivariate statistical approach that calculated a combination of weights variables such that the different types of voices according to the perceived voice quality (G) were optimally identified.

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Wendler, Prof. Dr. Tadeus Nawka, Dr. Dirk Verges

Instructional Course
15th European Congress of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Rodos-Kos, HELLAS, Greece

The phonetogram as the result of a two dimensional measurement of the range of the fundamental frequency (F0) for pitch, displayed against the range of the sound pressure level (SPL) for loudness, shows the dynamic capacities of a voice at a glance. In a coordinate system, musical pitch or fundamental frequency (Hz) is displayed on the abscissa, SPL (dB(A)) for loudness on the ordinate. ...
